The Story
The world looks a lot different right now with the spread of COVID-19. And one of the biggest impacts is on the workplace.
Why?
Every industry is in uncharted territory. With people social distancing across the country and businesses closing their doors, executives are working hard to get their teams through this uncertain time. And business leaders are finding new ways to support their employees. Even when they can't be with them in person.
How's that going?
On our weekly career podcast, Skimm'd from the Couch, female execs told us how they lead in times of crisis. And they shared strategies for dealing with uncertainty, at work and at home.
Here's what they had to say:
“I dive in really deep. Because I think leadership in crisis is about getting down into the trenches. There’s no substitute for being there.” - Meg Whitman, CEO of Quibi. Listen to more from Meg here.
“Remember people … are really human… I think when you do that and when you treat people the right way, they’re even more dedicated. And they feel they’re getting the support they deserve. And that’s what people deserve.” - Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook. Listen to more from Sheryl here.
“When you go through difficulties, when you see other people going through difficulty, you have empathy. You feel for them because you yourself have gone through it.” - Ratana Stephens, CEO of Nature's Path. Listen to more from Ratana here.
“In a moment of uncertainty, we [should] resist the urge to look outside of ourselves. We get still. We go inside, and we practice feeling for the knowing.” - Glennon Doyle, author and activist. Listen to more from Glennon here.
"[This crisis] is a really stark example about why these issues around building better workplaces for our employees are not just nice-to-do things. They are essential to build resilient workforces and workplaces for the future.” - Tina Tchen, CEO of Time's Up. Episode dropping 6/10.
"I think when you have a crisis like the one we're having right now… in a way, it is kind of a unique opportunity to really think about what really matters to the core of that business and rethink it.” - Adriana Cisneros, CEO of Cisneros. Listen to more from Adriana here.
