Creativity strikes on its own schedule. But if having a creative outlet or (re)committing to your craft is on your 2024 to-do list, you may want some help harnessing that energy to get started.
So to make your passion projects a priority, we put together a few recs to help you stay on your artistic A-game all year long.
• Learn from the pros.
Luckily, trying to tap into your most creative self is not a novel problem — many a book has been written on the subject. And you can use them to give yourself a head start as you explore the creative process.
The Artist's Way is a tried and tested workbook for people looking to make more space for creativity in their lives. And it comes recommended by artists like Anne Lamott and Martin Scorsese.
Want a book with a little less homework? Bestselling author Elizabeth Gilbert shares insight into her creative process and talks about the attitudes, approaches, and habits that can help you live your most creative life in Big Magic.
• Get organized.
Creativity can feel free-flowing. But building some process around that wonderful mess of creative chaos can help you make meaningful progress toward your goals.
One way to add some structure? Try the Pomodoro Technique for time management. To get started, pick one task to focus on and set a timer for 25 minutes. Stay focused during that short time, and don’t let yourself get distracted. Then, take a five-minute break to relax before the next sequence. Repeat this cycle four times, then give yourself a longer (20-30 min) break before starting up again. Psst…this free Chrome browser extension will automate the whole process for you.
• Find your people.
It takes a village to…take a creative project from idea to execution. And having the right team behind you can make all the difference.
Join a local group of creatives who do what you do — whether you meet in person to produce in parallel or connect digitally to stay accountable and chat through relatable roadblocks. Not sure where to start? This virtual membership gives you access to coach-led group work sessions to focus on creative tasks. So you can block off your precious time, and get the support you need.
