One quick update before we get to it: Starting next weekend, the Daily Skimm will take a new approach to our Saturday and Sunday newsletters. We won’t say much more now, except that we worked hard and think it’s really good. We hope you will, too.
— The Weekend Skimm team
The start of a new year kicks off a frenzy of new intentions, goals or resolutions. For 2024, many took to social media to share them — but with a fresh spin that not only revealed what’s in for the new year, but what’s out. We asked staff at Skimm HQ to share what’s on their list. Here’s what they had to say...
Rashaan Ayesh, Daily Skimm writer:
In: Buying investment and staple pieces and dating myself.
Out: Buying stuff just because it’s on sale, and men who won’t let me do their birth chart.
Sam Baker, vice president of commerce:
In: Scalp health. Like focusing on the root of the problem — no pun intended — with hair oils, detoxes, and specialty scalp treatments in spas.
Out: Only targeting split ends for healthy hair.
Shannon Baumann, senior creative manager:
In: Cozy cardio and probiotics.
Out: HIIT workouts and green juice (sorry, I just can’t).
Maria Corpus, Daily Skimm editor:
In: Embracing the arts in my community.
Out: Staying in to binge watch old shows (like “Gilmore Girls”).
Lauren LoMenzo, growth marketing project manager:
In: Gut health, listening to your body, [and] saying ‘no.’
Out: Intense cardio, X, and shots.
Jana Pollack, senior manager, creative strategy in branded content:
In: Putting things in perspective, but still complaining when it feels good. Reading near a lit candle, long walks, [and] aging.
Out: Small plates, not accepting the things you cannot change, [and] five-year plans.
Sami Roberts, Well writer:
In: Strength training, resting, self-compassion, skipping workouts, [putting the] phone on Do Not Disturb most of the time, [and] no-buy months.
Out: Being a cardio queen, self-criticism, ignoring my body’s cues, being available all the time, [and] impulse purchases.
Caroline Schaefer, design copywriter:
In: Going to the movie theater.
Out: Inclusion of a potentially-viral dance scene in every movie or show.
Liz Smith, senior manager in branded content:
In: Flexible work, trying and failing, outfit repeating, pasta, “I Voted” stickers, rest, [and] loud budgeting.
Out: Unattainable goals, pay gaps, humble bragging (just say it), [and] declaring that you’re taking a social media break on social media (just do it).
Psst, this interview has been edited for length and clarity.
what's happening
👗 In style…
Move over Y2K fashion, the ‘80s are making a comeback with bomber jackets and lots of leather. Also seeing a roaring revival: Leopard print. In the meantime, wool coats, fuzzy scarves, and capes are stealing the street style show.
🏠 In your home…
Green hues are moving in. So are corduroy and plaid, which are giving homes a preppy refresh. That’s as squiggly mirrors and gray tones move on out.
❤️ In relationships…
Low-maintenance friendships may not be all that they’re cracked up to be. So if you’re craving closer connections, time may truly be of the essence. Plus, why the holiday season often turns into breakup season.
