October 12, 2021 (New York, NY) – theSkimm today launched Pop Cultured with theSkimm, a weekly pop culture podcast that gets to the heart of the trending stories millennial women can’t stop thinking about. Each episode Skimms the who, what, when and where of the buzzworthy stories that are sweeping headlines and timelines — and digs deep into the why. Skimm’rs already count on theSkimm to break down the most critical news stories, financial advice, health habits and more. And with Pop Cultured, listeners can get the bottom line on the pop culture moments that will come to define this era. Hosted by theSkimm’s Bridget Armstrong, whose producer credits include Switched On Pop and Land of the Giants: The Netflix Effect, new episodes air every Tuesday at 5pm EST. The first 4 episodes will be presented to you by our partner Gevalia.
“Pop Cultured with theSkimm cuts through the noise and gives context on the moments that are driving culture, in a way only theSkimm can. It's not just about rehashing celebrity drama or the latest TikTok trends,” said theSkimm’s co-founders and co-CEOs Carly Zakin and Danielle Weisberg. "We have always met our audience where they are, and at a time when they are balancing so much, we want to make it just as easy for them to dig into the latest in pop culture as we already do with career, news, money, and wellness."
theSkimm is launching Pop Cultured following the success of their news podcast, Skimm This, and career podcast, 9 to 5ish.
"We're a generation hooked on culture. From what we watch to how we dress, culture shapes our perspective on the world and we're excited to tackle that in a bigger way," added theSkimm’s Editor-in-Chief Niven McCall-Mazza. "Pop Cultured gets to the core of what today's biggest stories reveal about us as a society and provides Skimm'rs a broader view of what they're seeing in their feed and in the headlines.”
Pop Cultured with theSkimm does what theSkimm does best: in under 30 min, listeners get the bottom line on timely topics, informed by news sources and expert interviews. The audience also gets frequent recommendations on what to watch, listen to and read this week or a rundown of the buzziest pop culture highlights.
In the first few episodes, expect deep dives into the dual COVID-and-#MeToo controversies around rapper Nicki Minaj, the backlash over CBS’ new show The Activist, and what’s next in the Britney Spears conservatorship drama.
Some other episodes in the works for the coming weeks:
Hollywood crews on strike: The legions of professionals that work behind the scenes to make TV and movies are threatening to strike. We’ve been here before, in 2007 — and it changed entertainment forever. What’s next for the IATSE?
