Skimm Her Life is a series in our weekly newsletter, Skimm Your Life, where smart women share their favorite products.

We know that it’s a stressful time of the year. That’s why our favorite personal development author and coach, Gabby Bernstein, is here to share some basic techniques for self-compassion and managing anxiety. Plus, she’s sharing some of her favorite products, too. Gabby, take it away…

Do you have any basic techniques you can share about handling anxiety?

One-minute breath: breathe in for 20 seconds, hold your breath for 20 seconds, and then exhale for 20 seconds. One minute of this exercise can change your mood, calm your energy, and reduce your stress levels.

Any tips or affirmations on how we can all be more self-compassionate in our day to day?

I love to repeat the affirmation, “Everything is happening around me and I am truly taken care of.” This statement helps me feel safe and supported throughout each day.

For our readers that are new to you and your mindfulness work, which book of yours do you suggest starting with?

My most popular book is “The Universe Has Your Back.” In addition, folks who are new to my work may like “Super Attractor.”

Smartest purchase you’ve made recently?

Divi shampoo and conditioner. This has been a game changer for my hair.

Something you always have in your bag?

Think! protein bars, always. With my 44th birthday around the corner, I am super conscious about my protein intake. My favorite is the Creamy Peanut Butter.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

To never sweat the small stuff. I do my best to enjoy every moment of the day and not sweating the small stuff is a huge part of my practice.

Our readers have jam-packed schedules. How do you implement self-care or any sort of mindfulness into your everyday routine, especially on busy work days?

Take lots of little right actions. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by the enormity of your goals or desires, you should focus on taking small daily actions. These actions should align with your intentions and bring you closer to your desired outcome. This approach helps you stay grounded, stay connected to your goals, and create a sense of accomplishment along the way.

Favorite surprisingly useful item under $30?

Sunscreen. I love Paula’s Choice Healthy Glow Invisible Sunscreen Oil.

Your current favorite book and/or podcast to listen to?

I listen to the NPR Politics Podcast and I’m reading Richard Schwartz’s book, “No Bad Parts.”

Psst: This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
