As cold temperatures approach, we’re shifting our focus to making sure we’re as cozy as possible when we step outside. Like just as warm as we feel in the comfort of our homes. We’re talking warm winter coats, from parkas to puffers, teddy coats and all other jackets we can’t get enough of. It has to be warm, it has to be cute (duh), and it has to look good with our favorite winter boots for a Snow Day Look™.
If you’ve been nodding your head in agreement, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve found the best women's winter coats and jackets to keep you warm all season long — most we’ve worn ourselves — at various price points. Let’s bundle up.
A puffer jacket with a faux fur collar…
It’s a classic puffer silhouette that’s long enough to cover your bottom, which we’ve found is incredibly important when the wind chill is making us consider calling in sick. It’s filled with down blend to keep you toasty, and the faux fur collar adds a touch of flair. It comes in four colors. ($99.99+, Saks OFF 5TH)
A packable puffer with a hood…
If you’re on the go but need to stay warm, stash this jacket in your suitcase in its purse-like carrying case. It’s made from 100% recycled materials, has been tested to be warm enough for below-freezing temperatures, and, we’ll say it, looks pretty darn cool. It comes in black and four fun colors. Psst…this brand also makes a shearling moto jacket we’re obsessed with. ($298, The Arrivals)
A quilted jacket that’s perfect for layering…
Made of 100% cotton twill, this jacket is sturdy and warm but can be easily layered under a thicker parka or puffer. It’s essentially a quilted shacket (and we never say no to a shacket). The cotton is organic with no synthetics or dyes, and it’s machine-washable, so wear it out, wash, and repeat. Trust. ($250, Alex Crane)
A packable jacket with more than 1,000 five-star reviews…
It’s ultra-light, down-filled, and hits below the waist. Aka this winter coat has all the qualifications of being the one you reach for day after chilly day. Plus, it’s water-repellent with a detachable hood, so it’s suitable for light rain, sleet, or even snow. Customers love that it doesn’t make them look as bulky as other puffers. ($49.99, 32 Degrees)
The famous “Amazon Coat” that you’ve seen everywhere...
And for good reason. It’s very warm, has tons of easily accessible pockets, and a fleece-lined hood. It’s long enough to cover your butt, so you’ll be able to wear leggings without freezing. If you’re skeptical — don’t be. It’s got almost 14,000 five-star reviews. It comes in several colors, with and without faux fur. ($149.99, Amazon)
A quilted jacket with a fleece lining…
If there’s one name we trust with our warmth, it’s Barbour. Take it from us, this jacket will last years. It’s quilted with a warm and cozy fleece lining and a corduroy collar. We put this on and immediately want to stroll the English countryside or take cover from the rain in a local pub. It looks just as good paired with athleisure as it does with jeans and a sweater. ($290, Nordstrom)
The North Face one that staged a comeback…
When North Face brought this one out of the archives, we were skeptical as to how warm it could be. When we spotted it on the likes of Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid, we decided to give it a try. This short puffer absolutely lives up to the hype. The down filling makes it incredibly warm, and the outer nylon is water-repellent. Day after day, we find ourselves pulling it on with the Ugg-of-the-moment for coffee runs, walks, and everything in between. Psst…the platform Uggs are sold out pretty much everywhere, but if you can’t wait for a restock, you can find them here. You’re welcome. ($320, Urban Outfitters)
The Canada Goose one…
These winter coats made in Canada have become synonymous with warmth in recent years, though they’re definitely an investment. This one is packable into its own pocket, filled with down (even the hood), and is reinforced in areas that wear easily (like the armpits) so it’ll never tear. It’s a great puffer for traveling or commuting, and it comes in black and white. ($950, Neiman Marcus)
A sherpa teddy coat that’s extra long…
If you’re like us, you’ve recently rediscovered Banana Republic. We’re obsessed with this camel-colored shearling coat that demands to be seen. She has an oversized collar that makes a statement and is fully lined for warmth. The extra length will shield your legs from the cold when buttoned up. Sorry to all the coats hanging in our closet, this might just be our new favorite. ($400, Banana Republic)
A sporty jacket you’ll wear every day…
We find this down-filled jacket works just as well for outdoor running in the cold (what it’s made for) as for keeping us warm on our way to a workout class. We love that the fleece is stretchy, so we never feel confined if we’re wearing it all day. It’s also water-resistant and comes in six colors. ($198, Lululemon)
An insulated jacket from a classic brand…
Chances are you had a snow-day jacket from Columbia when you were a kid (just us?). There’s a reason these jackets have been a mainstay forever. They’re incredibly warm, even when the wind is icy, thanks to the synthetic down filling. It’s also water-repellent and has a sherpa-lined hood. Customers suggest sizing up for a roomier fit. ($159.99+, Amazon)
A sherpa trench that’s like wearing a big blanket…
If it’s not this cozy, we don’t want it. Leave it to Alo to make the perfect sherpa jacket to layer over your athleisure. It’s incredibly soft. It has zippered pockets to keep your valuables safe, and yes, it’s very warm. While you’re at it, grab a pair of our favorite on-the-go leggings. ($298, Alo Yoga)
A long alpaca coat that goes with everything…
We’ve been holding on to this secret for far too long: Eileen Fisher makes the best winter coats. This one is made with alpaca that’s surprisingly soft, so yes, that makes it a bit pricey, but it’s a piece you’ll return to year after year. Especially with the classic point collar and below-the-knee length. It comes in cream and gray. ($698, Neiman Marcus)
A faux-leather jacket with shearling lining…
If you want the look of a plush leather jacket, this one fits the bill. It’s faux leather with faux fur that looks like shearling on the inside for added warmth. It has an oversized fit, so you can easily layer a sweater underneath. We love the classic black and white, but it also comes in statement-making orange and green colorways. ($248, Free People)
A quilted jacket that’s one of Oprah’s Favorite Things…
If it’s good enough for Oprah (see more of her Favorite Things here), it’s good enough for us. It’s filled with synthetic down, is water-resistant, and has a quilted diamond pattern that sets it apart from the rest. It also has an adjustable hood and comes in five neutral colors. Done and done. Psst...use code NEWYEAR to take up to 80% off sale items. ($79.99+, Lands’ End)
