Skimm Her Life is a series in our weekly newsletter, Skimm Shopping, where smart women share their favorite things.

Margo here. A few months ago I got to pick the brain of Helen Reavey. She’s a hairstylist, trichologist, and the founder of scalp care brand Act+Acre. Today Helen is here to Skimm Her Life. She covers how to take care of your scalp, along with all the misconceptions that come with hair care. PS: Skimm’rs can get 25% sitewide at Act+Acre excluding subscriptions with code SKIMM25. Helen, take it away…

What is a trichologist? How do they differ from a dermatologist who can help with scalp issues?

A trichologist is a scalp specialist. They bridge the gap between your dermatologist and hairstylist to provide insights into the scalp’s role in overall hair health. While both can help with scalp issues, a trichologist provides targeted holistic care for scalp and hair health, whereas a dermatologist addresses broader skin and medical conditions, including those affecting the scalp.

If our audience is new to Act+Acre and scalp care in general, what are some products they could incorporate into their routine?

I recommend incorporating a weekly scalp treatment and a daily hydrating serum into your routine.

For the weekly treatment, opt for either our Scalp Detox Oil or our Salicylic Acid Scalp Exfoliator. The Detox Oil is ideal for dry scalps as it deeply hydrates and detoxifies the scalp. The Salicylic Acid Scalp Exfoliator gently exfoliates the scalp, removing excess oil and debris while unclogging hair follicles.

For daily hydration, I recommend our Daily Hydro™ Scalp Serum. This leave-on serum hydrates and nourishes the scalp without adding extra steps to your routine.

What inspired you to start the brand?

I started Act+Acre because I saw a major gap in the hair-care industry. While there was a lot of emphasis on hair styling and aesthetics, very little attention was paid to scalp health (which is essential for long-term hair health).

Our readers are short on time and have busy schedules. What’s one multipurpose product from Act+Acre they could add in that won’t take up a lot of their time?

The Daily Hydro™ Scalp Serum is a perfect choice.

What are some common misconceptions about hair loss, shedding, and breakage?

Myth: Washing your hair too often causes hair loss.

  • Fact: Shampooing does not directly cause hair loss. Hair shedding during washing is part of the natural hair growth cycle, where old hairs fall out to make room for new ones. While frequent shampooing may lead to dryness or breakage if done improperly, it does not cause hair to fall out from the root.

Myth: Cutting your hair more often makes it grow thicker and faster.

  • Fact: Cutting your hair does not impact the thickness or rate of hair growth. Trims help remove split ends and make hair look healthier, but don't influence growth from the scalp.

Myth: Brushing your hair 100 strokes a day promotes hair health.

  • Fact: Excessive brushing can actually cause damage to the hair cuticle and lead to breakage. It's important to brush your hair gently and only as needed.

What are some haircare/style trends you’re expecting to see later in the year?

People are becoming more aware that a healthy scalp leads to healthier hair, so we'll see more products and routines dedicated to scalp care. Low-maintenance hairstyles, like undone waves and natural textures, will continue to trend as people embrace their natural hair and opt for minimal styling routines.

What’s the best routine for someone who’s dealt with dryness and flaking?

Dryness and flaking can result from a variety of factors, including a lack of proper nutrients, inadequate moisture, changes in diet, improper cleansing, or environmental factors like temperature shifts.

To manage dryness effectively, follow these steps:

  • Incorporate a weekly scalp treatment. Start with a treatment like our Scalp Detox Oil, a 20-minute prewash. It’ll break down buildup, prevent dryness, and balance the scalp’s microbiome.

  • Use a fragrance-free shampoo. This helps avoid irritation while restoring hydration. Look for gentle formulations that cleanse without stripping natural oils.

  • Always double-cleanse. The first wash removes product build-up, while the second addresses the scalp. Emulsify the shampoo in your hands, then part your hair. Work from the nape of your neck to your hairline before rinsing and repeating.

  • Apply a daily hydrating scalp serum. After cleansing, apply a hydrating serum like our Daily Hydro™ Scalp Serum. It’s formulated with skincare actives like Hyaluronic Acid, Amino Acids, and Glycerin to deeply hydrate and fortify your scalp’s natural barrier.

  • Use a cooling scalp serum as needed. For instant relief from itching or flakes, apply our Microbiome Cooling Scalp Serum either after showering or as a daily spot treatment.

Be sure to stay hydrated and make sure you're getting essential vitamins and nutrients. These also support a healthy scalp microbiome and promote stronger hair.

Is it true that washing your hair once a week is actually better for your hair?

While some believe that washing your hair less frequently can train your scalp to produce less oil, this is actually a myth. To maintain a healthy scalp, it's essential to provide the right care and ingredients to keep it clean and balanced. Instead of limiting washes, consider using products formulated with niacinamide and fermented ingredients. These can help balance the scalp and regulate oil production leading to healthier hair overall.
